Originally, this secluded valley served as a grazing ground for cattle. However, its significance changed dramatically in 1566 when a group of nuns sought refuge here during a pirate attack on the island’s main city. Due to its remote location, inaccessible by sea and enveloped by some of the island’s highest peaks, it became a natural sanctuary for those in search of safety.
