Discover one of Madeira’s most scenic and authentic mountain trails on a guided hike through the Vereda do Urzal, following an ancient mountain path connecting the island’s north and south.
Begin your hike in Lombo do Urzal, in Boaventura, on Madeira’s north coast, and finish in Fajã dos Cardos, in the spectacular valley of Curral das Freiras. This moderate-level hike takes you through lush vegetation, impressive mountain scenery, and the unique landscapes of Madeira’s interior.
As you leave Lombo do Urzal, the trail gradually climbs through dense vegetation and areas of native mountain flora. Along the way, enter sections of the Laurissilva Forest, Madeira’s ancient native forest and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.
The climb continues towards Boca das Torrinhas, one of the most impressive points of the route. From here, enjoy breathtaking views of the dramatic peaks surrounding Curral das Freiras and admire the rugged volcanic landscape that makes Madeira so unique.
Boca das Torrinhas is also an important mountain junction, with a connection towards Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak, via the PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada.
From Boca das Torrinhas, the trail continues towards Curral das Freiras, following the ancient path down through the mountains until reaching Fajã dos Cardos.
