Description
Discover Madeira from above on a breathtaking journey to the island's most iconic observation decks, dramatic landscapes and hidden corners of the mountains. This tour was created for travelers who want to experience the true essence of Madeira's lofty peaks, deep valleys and unspoiled nature, all in a single journey.
Your adventure begins with a comfortable pick-up directly from your accommodation, followed by a scenic drive to Pico dos Barcelos, one of the most charming observation decks in Funchal. Here, you'll enjoy a sweeping view of the city, the bay and the surrounding hills — the perfect introduction to the island's geography and beauty.
The tour continues towards the mountains, ascending to the famous Eira do Serrado Viewpoint, where you'll see one of Madeira's most dramatic landscapes: the Curral das Freiras Valley. Surrounded by imposing peaks, this secluded village offers a unique glimpse into the island's history and past. It's a moment of pure wonder, perfect for taking photos and listening to local stories.
We'll descend to Curral das Freiras, where you can go on a hike and enjoy a tasting of traditional liqueurs, especially chestnut liqueur.
Next, we'll continue to the Paradão Observation Deck, a lesser-known gem that offers a different perspective of the valley and its rugged terrain. Peaceful, authentic and with sweeping views, this spot adds an exclusive touch to the experience.
The road continues to climb up to the clouds, reaching the majestic Pico do Arieiro, the third-highest point on Madeira at 1,818 meters. With almost lunar rock formations and stunning views of the central mountain range, Pico do Arieiro is one of the highlights of any visit to the island. There is a short 1.5-km hike to the famous Ninho das Águias (Eagle's Nest), an observation deck suspended above cliffs and valleys that seem to go on forever.
After the hike, we'll stop at Barracão, a typical mountain restaurant where you can savor local food, experience Madeiran hospitality and recharge your batteries. Whether it's a soup, a sandwich or a full meal, this stop adds flavor and authenticity to your day, but it's optional, not mandatory.
The journey continues to Miradouro do Pico Alto, which offers a unique perspective of the island's interior. Here, you can see the contrast between the lush north and the sunnier south, as well as Madeira's volcanic origin.
To round off the day, we'll visit Largo das Barbosas, a peaceful rural square surrounded by nature and local life. It's the perfect place to slow down, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the tranquility before returning to Funchal, which can be done by traditional Madeiran wicker toboggans or even by cable car, with pick-up at the end to return to your accommodation.
