Description

Your adventure starts with a pickup from your accommodation, heading towards Ponta de São Lourenço in Caniçal. Occasionally, there may be a short stop at a local spot for refreshments, though this is not guaranteed.

The hike begins along the eastern peninsula, known for its unique vegetation such as Everlasting (Helichrysum devium) and Ice Flower (Mezembryanthemum crystallinum). This area is part of a partial natural reserve and the Natura 2000 network.

Birdwatchers can expect to see protected species like Cory's shearwater, Madeiran storm-petrel, Bulwer’s petrel, and common tern, as well as Berthelot's pipit, goldfinch, and canary. The walk spans approximately 6 kilometers with about 100 meters of elevation gain, taking around 3 hours and 30 minutes at an easy to moderate pace.

Along the trail, you will enjoy views of the Deserted Islands to the south and Porto Santo Island to the north, allowing sights of both Madeira's northern and southern coasts depending on visibility.

At the trail's end, take a rest at Casa do Sardinha before retracing the route back. This hike offers an immersive experience of Madeira’s eastern coastline and natural environment.
