Description
The tour starts in central Funchal and heads west along Estrada Monumental, a historic route connecting the hotel zone (Zona Lido) to the city outskirts. Traveling at a comfortable pace, the tuk-tuk allows passengers to breathe in the sea air while a private guide points out coastal cliffs and explains the city’s expansion from its natural amphitheater.
Early in the route, passengers glimpse Praia Formosa, Madeira’s largest black sand and pebble beach, marking the transition from urban to rural-fishing landscapes. Crossing into the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, the scenery shifts to lush hillsides covered with banana plantations. The tuk-tuk slows on secondary roads like Caminho Velho so passengers can closely observe gigantic banana bunches and the banana flower ('banana heart'). The guide explains the efforts of local farmers who carry heavy bunches along steep paths and stairways.
The vehicle descends to sea level and stops beside Câmara de Lobos Bay for a 30-minute break. This pause allows time to explore the village center on foot and experience the local atmosphere. After the break, the tuk-tuk returns to Funchal via an alternative route chosen to offer additional scenic views.
