The tour starts with a stop at a viewpoint 355 meters above sea level, providing a 360-degree panorama of Funchal bay and surrounding mountains.
Your expert driver navigates steep, scenic switchbacks through terraced mountainsides while sharing the island's history. The first key stop is Eira do Serrado viewpoint, located at 1,095 meters elevation.
From Eira do Serrado, you look down on a volcanic crater covered in forest, with the village of Curral das Freiras nestled at the bottom. This isolated village was used as a refuge by 16th-century nuns escaping pirate attacks.
The tour then descends into the valley, allowing you to explore the village streets, visit local cafes, and sample regional specialties such as chestnut liqueur and traditional chestnut cake.
