Description
The tour begins in Camacha, known as the place where football was first played in Portugal. Next, you ascend to Pico do Areeiro to enjoy panoramic views over Madeira’s central mountainous massif. From there, the route descends to Ribeiro Frio Forest Park, where you can visit trout nurseries and spot endemic Laurissilva forest species such as the laurel tree (Laurus novocanariensis).
Continuing north, the tour passes through the parish of Faial before reaching Santana, the island’s northern town famous for its traditional thatched houses. On the return journey, the route goes through Porto da Cruz by the sea, where there is an optional visit to a sugar cane rum factory. The tour then stops at Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto, a viewpoint offering wide views of the northern cliffs at Ponta de São Lourenço.
The return to Funchal includes a pass by Pico do Facho viewpoint, overlooking the Machico valley.
