Experience the wild beauty of Madeira’s southwest coast on this guided circular hike starting and finishing in the picturesque village of Paul do Mar. The trek covers approximately 10.5 km, with a total positive elevation gain of around 700 meters, making it a rewarding walk for hikers with a moderate level of fitness.
Starting at sea level, the trail follows old local paths that gradually climb above the village, offering stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean and the island’s impressive coastal cliffs. Pass through the rural areas of Raposeira and Fajã da Ovelha, crossing traditional agricultural terraces and quiet countryside landscapes.
This section of the hike offers a deeper connection to local life and nature, where it is possible to observe endemic plant species and local wildlife characteristic of Madeira’s unique natural environment. Several natural viewpoints allow you to admire the rugged coastline, the contrast between the deep blue ocean and the green slopes, and the sense of openness that characterizes this part of the island.
