A few local tips for ferry trips

If you’re hopping on a ferry in Madeira, try to pick a seat on the starboard side when heading east – the cliffs and hidden coves look more dramatic from there. Also, early morning rides can be quieter and less windy, which makes for a more pleasant outing.

One of my favorite off-the-beaten-path ferry adventures is the quick hop from Caniçal to the tiny Desertas Islands. It’s a bit less touristy and you can often spot monk seals hauled out on the rocks, which is rare in the Atlantic. Just keep a jacket handy, the sea breeze picks up fast out there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about ferry sightseeing in Madeira? Here’s what I usually get asked.

Most people use these ferries just to get from point A to B, but I'd say the journey itself is a big part of the fun. The views of Madeira’s coastline, especially around Garajau and Caniçal, are stunning and well worth paying attention to.
Late spring to early autumn offers calmer seas and better weather, so your ride won’t be too bumpy. Plus, marine life like dolphins are more active then, making sightings a real possibility.
Absolutely. Some ferries have limited refreshments, but I always pack my own water and a little picnic. It’s nice to be able to sit back and enjoy the ride without hunting for food.
Yes! Besides the regular route to Porto Santo, some ferries run to the Desertas Islands, which are basically untouched. Not many tourists go there so it feels like you have a secret view of the wild side of Madeira.
You can often buy tickets on the spot, especially for popular routes like Funchal to Porto Santo. But in summer, I’d book ahead because boats fill up fast. Check local ferry websites or ask at the port when you arrive.
